Aaron Swartz

Aaron Swartz was arrested for breaking and entering charges on January 6th, 2011 for hacking into M.I.T.’s computer networks to download journal articles from JSTOR. He was then charged for two counts of wire fraud and 11 violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. The consequences for these charges were a maximum of $1 million in fines and 35 years in prison. Then on January 11th, 2013 one of Aaron Swartz’s friend had discovered that Aaron had hung himself. He believed that that this information should be free public access, which is the reason for him breaking into M.I.T.’s computer networks. The only law that he broke was the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Many people believe that this law viciously attacked Aaron Swartz and that the law was too strict. The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act bans unauthorized access of computers and many people believe that the law was too vague and fuzzy. Including a former Justice Department Attorney. This law can potentially put people in jail for many years even if the person has done no harm. Many people believe that the law is too strict and that it needs to be revised. Aaron Swartz was abused and attacked by the government and didn’t deserved to be harassed by the government like that.
